2025 Route 66 Races Prep

Route 66 Races - Mark Bravo at the start of the Tulsa Marathon in the early morning dark with rain

Hope things are great your way, and that you had some enjoyable and fulfilling miles this weekend!

As I watch the NYC Marathon, I think of a few of our athletes who are there about to start the journey through those burroughs in this arguably the EPIC of all marathons. Lacey, Wanda and Susan take the line today for that race, and their journeys to the Start epitomize what running is all about. It took Susan and Wanda 2 days to get there from here, but they persevered! (Don’t know if Lacey went through such drama…)

They stayed positive, adjusted their plan, and made the most of the situation, all with grace and gratitude. That will serve these athletes well today, and going forward!

We’re in a sport that builds our resilience simply by doing it-in LIFE, not just running-and we take lessons (some we don’t even realize at the time) that stay with us forever! How fortunate we are! Good luck ladies!

Tuesday November 4, 2025, we head to Nichols Hills Plaza to loosen the legs and spin them for a few segments at an upbeat pace, though controlled. As many of you are running one (or more) of the Route 66 races, we’re 1 week away from some form of a 2-week taper. Part of that is ‘reminding’ your fast-twitch miles-although running shorter and easier most days-that they’re still fast! So we’ll introduce that mentality Tuesday, as we do 2-4 miles, and aim for 5 3-minute heightened turnover sessions, recovering 2 minutes easy (and after 5 minute warmup.)

Adjust as you like, and to what fits your regimen. Remember, upbeat is not sprinting-think easy but good posture, faster turnover and breathing, but both under control. Not a perfect science, but each workout like this brings more “comfort zone” to this practice, and CONFIDENCE. Both integral to realizing what’s inside you, especially on raceday!

I’ll have water with NUUN, and come ahead of 6pm if you like for added camaraderie. You’ve all been impressive, and that’s a bar that’s unique to each of us.

Recognize your consistency and ‘stick-to-itiveness’ through this training cycle, and you should be proud!

Reach me here on the website and come by the OKC Memorial Marathon booth at Route 66 Friday and/or Saturday and say hi!

Keep thriving, all.
– Mark
